What makes us pick our fa-
vorites? Is it a preference of
a local team over a rival? Do
you base your decision on
performance? We all have
our favorites for some reason
or another and I’m not just
talking about baseball teams.
What is it that makes you sit
up straight or make a break
for your camera when a SOO
locomotive rumbles past, but
not Burlington Northern? Is
it some psychological con-
nection to a memory from
your childhood? Maybe you
just really like the paint
schemes.
My personal favorite is the
North Shore. Really, I enjoy
just about all forms of elec-
tric rail travel, but perhaps
because the North Shore was
a hometown line, the local
history attached makes it
more interesting to me. The
beautiful green and salmon
colors don’t hurt either. Ob-
viously my interest in the
North Shore is not fixed to a
childhood memory as I was
born too late to fully be able
to appreciate this line. I still
find myself drawn to track
maps, posters, photos, vid-
eos, slides, books and stories
from the men and women
that rode on it.
My fondness for the North
Shore spills over into my
modeling where I have made
sure to replicate old trolley
lines still imbedded in more
modern day streets, a sign of
progress while being unable
to shake off the remnants of
the past. My attention is
pulled towards models and
layouts at shows with spider
webs of catenaries. I look
forward to railfan trips on
restored interurbans.
I also have a soft spot for
Conrail. However, I have no
explanations for that affinity.
I know some people prefer
some roads because of locale.
Track maps that show heavy
duty electric locomotives
pulling and pushing through
harsh mountainous terrain
makes some of you weak in
the knees while dozens of
rows of crisscrossing tracks
in massive yards generate a
flutter in the hearts of oth-
ers.
Discussions can become
quite heated on the topic of
which road is the better one.
Fans of unpopular lines take
some ribbing, others get
roasted online. But in the
end, does it really matter
why we like what we like,
so long as we enjoy our-
selves? No. Not really. *

Bring Old Lionel
Locomotives Back to Life

Bringing life back to a classic Lionel locomo-
tive is a task even a novice to the hobby can
do. Most, if not all, of Lionel’s motors from
the early 1920s through the mid to late 1970s
utilize the same essential motors, just in vari-
ous shapes and sizes. Many people don’t
know how easy it is to restore these pieces of

history to running as good as they were when
they were new.
Every motor Lionel used operates on any-
where from 6-22 volts of AC power. Howev-
er, most motors are most content running at
roughly 12-14 volts, and will greatly in-
