Week 7 to 9 – Length and Perimeter
Children are introduced to millimetres for the first time and build
on their understanding of centimetres and metres.
It is important that child have a variety of hands on experiences
and opportunities to explore the concept of a millimetre.
Measure these lines to the nearest cm, then to the nearest mm
What would be the best equipment to measure X with? (e.g. tape
measure, ruler, metre stick)
Look at each side of different measuring equipment – what’s the
same, what’s different?
What do we have to remember when using a ruler to measure?
Which side are we going to use to measure?
What unit of measure would we use to measure X?
What should you do if it the object does not start from 0?
Look and think about real life objects.
What unit would you use to measure each one?
Possible examples:
Fingernail
Height of a

Eraser

playground
Pencil

What is the length of each pencil?

Eva says that the car is 6 cm and 5 mm
Lainey is correct.
The other two
have not lined up
the ruler correctly.
Paige thinks that this chew bar is 4 cm
long. Is she correct?
Lainey says the car is 5 cm
Macey says the car is 4 cm 5 mm
