with a very nice
victory in the Qatar Open, but once again only a er winning
a final play-o against Yu Yanqyi, who was the clear winner of
the first Qatar Open
. This time both players reached a

The traditional Groningen Open was won by Jorden van
Foreest and Shyam Sundar, both with . / .
In the Zurich Open one of of your commentators, Arkadij
Naiditsch, took clear first with / .
In Al-Ain nobody was a match for Wang Hao, who scored a
fantastic / and gained over rating points.
We can already look forward to the Wijk-aan-Zee event (which
starts in the middle of January), with the participation of
Magnus Carlsen. And then on the th the Gibraltar Open
begins, with Anand, Nakamura and many more top players.

Ivanchuk’s games are usually fun to watch, with a lot of
interesting ideas and original play, but Van Wely is also a
very fighting player who stands by his Sicilian already for
many years. Ivanchuk seems to celebrate his comeback in
Wijk aan Zee with a fantastic start of / and we are going
to see one of this excellent victories. In the current game the
position quickly becoming extremely sharp and complicated,
where White clearly has a better overview and with a perfect
domination of his pieces he makes Black’s play look almost
funny. A great game to watch and learn from.

Van Wely used to play the Najdorf more o en, but
he also o en goes for a lot of di erent versions of the Paulsen
or Sheveningen.

A rare move order in the
recent games, usually Black goes for ...Qc or ...a .

In case of .f we would be back to the main lines,
but Ivanchuk tries an interesting idea.

Lately in the Najdorf it becomes more and more
fashionable to put the queen on e instead of the usual
f -Qf . The queen on e has the advantage that White has
the possibility of playing g and Bg and at the same time
sometimes Nd or Nf are possible as well.

Van Wely continues with the standard set up. Maybe an
interesting try for Black could be to play ... Bd and a quick
Qa and Rc , trying to save a tempo on the a move.
