And the winner of the Candidates Tournament is Sergey
Karjakin! Congratulations on qualifying for the upcoming
match in New York in November against Magnus Carlsen.
We saw a very dramatic finish of the tournament, where in
the last round we had the direct encounter between Karjakin
and Caruana for the qualification to the WCC match. Caruana
needed a win with Black and it was a sharp game where
things were very unclear until the moment where a small slip
allowed Karjakin to finish the game in a beautiful manner. All
in all it was a very exciting event where four players had good
chances to qualify at some point during the event. First it was
Aronian who had a great start and was on + , then Anand was
on + a few times, and of course Karjakin and Caruana. Giri
showed his peaceful side and made / draws! :)
The question for many now is whether Karjakin has a chance
against Magnus Carlsen? I think maybe, because Sergey is
playing very stable chess, he is very well prepared and in great
physical shape, he is capable of fighting long games until the
end without any major mistakes and is defending extremely
well all kind of positions. We are going to see what happens
in November...

In comparison to the main lines with ... b ,
Black has an extra h -h move, which actually does not matter
at all, because in most of the lines there (and also here) Black
has to play h with the idea of developing the bishop to h .
[ ...Qxf is more logical, but it runs into the tactical motif of
.e ! dxe
.Ndxb ! and Black ends up in trouble.]
We are in the last and decisive round of the Candidates
tournament. The steak is not less than being the Challenger
of Magnus Carlsen for the World Champion title. The situation
is quite clear, which was a ecting the outcome of this game
as well. Karjakin and Caruana are the leaders and Anand is
half point behind them. In case of tie, Karjakin is the first,
unless Anand beats Svidler with the black pieces, which would
result Caruana being first. Caruana could hardly caunt on
this result, therefore he had to take some huge risk to win
somehow with the black pieces, but of course, on this level,
when your opponent is satisfied with the draw, this is an
extremely di icult task...

[The main line

Black is doing very well positionally. He has the two
bishops and a very strong center. Without queens on board,
we could already give him the favor. However the drawback
of his position is the king, which has no safe place on the
board. The pawn structure is exposed on both sides, therefore
castling is very risky, while keeping the king in the center is
always dangerous. White has to open the position, therefore
the f move is very natural in such positions.

Perhaps it looked
more natural to take back with the bishop, but it is very
important to secure the e pawn. The d and f could be well
protected by an e bishop, but the safety of the e pawn is
even more important and it could quickly get under attack by
Ne -d , g -Bh and plans like this.

It could be a dream scenario for Black if he could
transfer his bishop to e throught h -f . Of course, White will
never allow this.

[A well-known tactical blow in similar positions is
