it had been thrown in, in total disgust,
one, then two, then three, then four small
points arise that ‘could’ just have made all
the difference. Not changing that perished
elastic that snapped on a last-minute sh,
not prepping your hook baits the way you
would etc… the list is absolutely endless.
It’s a topic worth thinking about. Next
time you have a moment to ponder, or
discuss with like-minded friends, ask the
question “Have you ever given anything
100 per cent?” and see what the response
is. The outcome will be one that could
fuel many a dinner party, or pub crawl…
providing you don’t ask the question in
an insulting way, of course, and you don’t
ask the question as the dinner host lays the
main course in front of you on the table!

arose in our of ces a few weeks
back about giving 100 per cent.
The question was simply:
“Do you ever think that you’ve given
100 per cent, and what does 100 per cent
actually mean?” To different people it
means different things, but we came to the
collective conclusion among the team that
it was highly unlikely anyone had ever
given 100 per cent, because there are just
so many factors that could be taken into
account.
Anyone saying they had was met with
the following retort: “You’re telling us
there wasn’t a single aspect (large or small)
that could have altered the outcome of that
event, or course of events?”
Prep is a fantastic example of this and
something that Dan Webb covers in this
issue in a more jovial manner. But that rig
that you never tied, or box of hooklengths
you never nished may have actually
ended up costing you… in which case you
didn’t give it 100 per cent.
Does giving anything 100 per cent mean
you live and breathe it every waking
moment of every day? Not necessarily, but
the likelihood is that the more time you
put in the greater the rewards you will
reap.
The question was one we ltered onto
our social media pages… and in doing
so seemed to cause offence to some who
defended their opinion that they ‘had’
given 100 per cent to something when, in
fact, there were potentially maybe other
unobvious, obscure elements that could
have been employed. Therefore meaning
100 per cent hadn’t ACTUALLY been
given, on later re ection.
Of course the constraints of making
life work – for many that’s a job, home,
family and other elements – dictates
that we can’t give a hobby what some
would term 100 per cent at all. But
then you have to consider that to each
person giving 100 per cent means
different things.
There are, of course, many occasions
when an angler may ‘mouth off’ in a
light-hearted, bantering sort of way
that they’d “given 100 per cent and
couldn’t work out why they hadn’t
won the match.” Yet, on re ection
during the drive home in the van with
tackle rattling about in the back after
