t never ceases to amaze
me these days just how
good fishing tackle is.
More specifically, how
good the tackle that we
would term affordable or
‘budget’ really is.
The Middy pole test in
this issue is a prime example,
with one of its poles, the
Xtreme M2, available in the
shops for around £225 at 10
metres.
If you’re an angler who
never, or rarely, fishes at
this long a length anyway
and you concentrate your
pole fishing efforts in near
margins or on short lines
you can feed by hand,
then you really are losing
nothing by plumping for
a pole like this instead of
a longer, more expensive
one when you’ll leave most
of the larger sections in the
dark confines of your rod
holdall anyway!
Spend the money on a
few spare top kits instead
and you’ll still have plenty
of spare cash in the bank to
keep the other half happy.
You don’t have to wind
the clock back too far to a
time when less expensive
items of tackle really were
‘less expensive’ items of
tackle. Remove the fancy
graphics, whistles and bells
nowadays, though, and I’d
say most anglers would be
hard pressed to tell higher-
end poles apart from their
less expensive brethren.
This isn’t to say that
paying a premium for
higher-end items isn’t ‘worth
it’ – it certainly can be if your
styles of fishing demand the
very best in the extremes –
but for many this simply isn’t
necessary.
There’s no lesser
enjoyment to be had by
using less expensive items
of tackle and, in all but a
few isolated cases, spending
more certainly won’t make
you a better, more capable
angler.
For that you need to focus
on the important elements
– watercraft, fish behaviour,
feeding and the like.
Remember that the tackle
we use is simply a necessity
to carry out the job we need
to do: to present that rig
where it needs to be put
and to land the fish that we
hook, nothing more.
There’s also something
of a resurgence towards
natural-water venues of late,
particularly where matches
are concerned. There are
plenty of such articles inside
this issue to reflect that
trend, as well as all the usual
other goodness you can
expect to find in the shape
of carp articles and reviews.
And don’t forget to check

hasn’t quenched your pole
angling thirst.
