Broadly speaking, low cost and
high quality (low noise and good
regulation) are mutually contradic-
tory requirements. Specifically for
power supplies, the logical solu-
tion to this dilemma is to combine
linear and switching technologies in
order to reap the benefits of both,
which calls for a more complicated
design.

The main application areas are in
measuring time intervals and fre-

An oscilloscope with electrical-
ly isolated inputs is out of the

differential probes, which (within
certain limits) enable voltages to
be measured without reference to
ground, often cost the private user
more than a complete scope does.

of the task in hand require the use
of isolated connections to your
oscilloscope? You build the Elektor
Isolated Oscilloscope Probe.

ments you need an A/D converter
(ADC) chip which has good res-

have developed a board containing
a four-channel 16-bit ADC. It’s
no coincidence the board uses

Linux board, the Xmega Webserver
and the latest Extension shield for
Arduino.
